Collagen for Tendons and Ligaments: What Does the Research Actually Say?

If you lift weights, run, play sports, or simply want to remain active as you get older, healthy muscles are only part of the equation.

Your muscles have to transfer force through tendons, and your joints depend on ligaments for stability.

Both are collagen-rich connective tissues. And both can take a beating over years of training and activity.

So if you're taking collagen specifically to support your tendons and ligaments, an important question is:

Does it matter which collagen you take?

I believe it does.

Tendons and Ligaments Aren't the Same Thing

They're often grouped together, but they have different jobs.

Tendons connect muscle to bone. They transfer the force produced by your muscles so your joints can move.

Ligaments connect bone to bone. They help stabilize and control your joints.

Both contain large amounts of collagen, and both have to tolerate repeated mechanical stress.

As a strength coach and trainer for more than 30 years, this matters to me. You can have strong muscles, but those muscles still need healthy connective tissue to transmit all that force.

That's one reason I've become increasingly interested in the connective-tissue side of training and aging.

What About Regular Collagen?

Regular hydrolyzed collagen isn't something I consider useless.

It provides a broad assortment of collagen-derived peptides and amino acids, including amino acids that are abundant in connective tissue.

But there's a difference between asking:

"Does collagen have potential benefits for connective tissue?"

and:

"Has this particular collagen peptide composition actually been studied for tendons and ligaments?"

That's where specialized collagen peptides become interesting.

What Is TENDOFORTE®?

TENDOFORTE® is a specific composition of Bioactive Collagen Peptides® developed by GELITA and studied specifically in relation to tendons and ligaments.

Rather than treating every collagen peptide mixture as interchangeable, researchers can produce particular peptide profiles and then study those specific compositions for particular applications.

That's the distinction that caught my attention as a formulator.

I wasn't simply looking for another source of collagen.

I wanted collagen peptides with research behind the tissue I was actually trying to support.

What Does the Research Show?

Human research on specific collagen peptides has produced some interesting findings.

In physically active adults with chronic ankle instability, supplementation with specific collagen peptides was studied over six months. Researchers reported improvements in measures of ankle function and a reduction in the number of ankle-joint injuries during a subsequent follow-up period.

Another clinical study investigated specific collagen peptides in people with Achilles tendinopathy while they participated in a structured calf-strengthening program. The combination was associated with improvements in symptoms and return to running compared with the training program alone.

These studies don't mean collagen magically repairs an injured tendon or ligament.

That's not how I look at the research.

What they do suggest is that specific collagen peptides can be a useful nutritional tool alongside the mechanical stimulus provided by appropriate exercise.

And that last part is particularly important.

Collagen Doesn't Replace Training

Connective tissue responds to loading.

That's something I never want people to lose sight of when talking about supplements.

You don't take collagen instead of appropriately loading a tendon. Nutrition and training aren't competitors.

The better question is:

Can we provide nutritional support while giving the tissue the mechanical stimulus it needs?

That's a much more sensible way to think about collagen supplementation.

As a coach, that's also how I approach the problem. Give the body an appropriate training signal, provide the nutritional materials and support it needs, and give adaptation enough time to occur.

What About Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is required for normal collagen formation.

That's why I believe it makes sense to include some vitamin C alongside collagen peptides rather than simply assuming everyone's vitamin C status and diet are always ideal.

It doesn't need to become the star of the formula.

But if collagen formation is the goal, vitamin C belongs in the conversation.

Why I Didn't Stop With Tendons and Ligaments

This eventually created another problem for me as a formulator.

Someone rarely walks up to me and says:

"Michael, I have a tendon problem rather than a cartilage problem."

They say:

"My knee hurts."

Or:

"My shoulder bothers me."

And when I ask where, they'll often just point to the joint.

That's understandable. Most people don't know exactly which structure is responsible for what they're feeling.

And even when you do know, an active joint is still a system.

That's why I ultimately didn't formulate a tendon-only collagen product.

I included TENDOFORTE® for tendon and ligament support, but I also wanted specialized support for cartilage, joint lubrication, and other aspects of healthy joint function.

That became the idea behind Epoch Nutrition Sciences Specialized Collagen Peptides — what I informally call Collagen 2.0.

So What's the Best Collagen for Tendons and Ligaments?

If tendons and ligaments are your primary reason for taking collagen, I wouldn't judge a product solely by the total grams of collagen listed on the label.

I'd ask a more specific question:

What collagen peptides am I actually getting, and have those particular peptides been studied for tendon and ligament health?

For me, that's the important distinction between simply taking collagen and taking a more targeted approach.

Regular collagen can still have a place.

But if you're active, already taking collagen, and want something more specifically designed around the connective tissues that allow you to keep training and moving, specialized collagen peptides are worth understanding.

Because building strong muscles is only part of staying strong.

You also have to take care of what connects them.
