Collagen for Cartilage: What Should You Look For?

If you want to stay active as you get older, cartilage becomes incredibly valuable.

You can build more muscle. You can improve your conditioning. You can get stronger.

But the surfaces inside your joints have to keep allowing all of that movement to happen.

That's one reason cartilage became such an important part of my thinking when I developed Specialized Collagen Peptides.

If you're already taking collagen for your joints, there's an important question worth asking:

Is the collagen you're taking actually designed with cartilage in mind?

What Exactly Is Cartilage?

Articular cartilage is the smooth connective tissue covering the ends of bones inside many of our joints.

It helps distribute forces across the joint and provides a remarkably low-friction surface that allows our bones to move against one another.

For someone who lifts weights, runs, plays sports, or simply wants to remain physically capable, that's pretty important real estate.

I've sometimes described healthy cartilage as becoming more valuable than gold as we get older.

Obviously, you can't put a dollar value on cartilage. The point is that preserving the tissues that allow you to move comfortably becomes increasingly important when remaining active is part of who you are.

Does Regular Collagen Support Cartilage?

Regular hydrolyzed collagen provides a broad mixture of collagen-derived peptides and amino acids.

That's not a bad thing. There is legitimate research behind collagen supplementation.

But as I discussed in my article on regular collagen versus specialized collagen peptides, I became interested in going one step further.

Rather than simply asking whether collagen in general might support connective tissue, I wanted to know:

Are there particular collagen peptides that have actually been studied specifically for cartilage?

That's what led me to FORTIGEL®.

What Is FORTIGEL®?

FORTIGEL® is a specific composition of Bioactive Collagen Peptides® developed and studied specifically in relation to joint cartilage.

That's an important distinction.

This isn't simply about putting more grams of generic collagen into a scoop.

Specialized collagen peptides allow us to ask a much more targeted question:

Can particular collagen-derived peptides provide nutritional support relevant to a particular connective tissue?

That's what interested me as a formulator.

If cartilage is one of the tissues I'm trying to support, I want an ingredient that has actually been researched with cartilage in mind.

But Then There's Type II Collagen

This is where collagen supplementation gets particularly interesting—and sometimes confusing.

You'll see supplements advertising:

Type I collagen.
Type II collagen.
Type III collagen.

That can make it sound as though they're simply different versions of the same thing.

But undenatured Type II collagen is fundamentally different from hydrolyzed collagen peptides.

Instead of consuming several grams of broken-down collagen peptides, undenatured Type II collagen preserves its native three-dimensional structure.

And the amounts used in human research can be surprisingly small.

Studies of undenatured Type II collagen, for example, have commonly used only 40 milligrams per day.

That's not a typo.

Milligrams—not grams.

How Can Such a Tiny Amount Matter?

This was one of the things that fascinated me when I originally researched the ingredient.

If we were simply trying to provide enough collagen material to physically build cartilage, 40 milligrams wouldn't make much sense.

But that's not the proposed mechanism.

Undenatured Type II collagen has been studied for an immune-mediated process commonly described as oral tolerance.

In simple terms, the intact Type II collagen interacts with the immune system through the gut in a way that may help modulate immune responses involving joint cartilage.

So I don't think about undenatured Type II collagen as another scoop of collagen building material.

It's a different tool.

And that's precisely why I wanted it in Specialized Collagen Peptides.

What Does the Human Research Show?

Undenatured Type II collagen has been studied in several human populations.

Importantly for active people, the research isn't limited to people diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Randomized, placebo-controlled studies have investigated 40 mg per day in otherwise healthy adults who experience joint discomfort associated with physical activity.

Researchers have reported improvements in measures such as knee flexibility, range of motion, and the ability to exercise before experiencing joint discomfort.

There is also research in people with knee osteoarthritis, although it's important to distinguish disease research from what we can appropriately claim for a dietary supplement intended for healthy, active adults.

The research doesn't mean undenatured Type II collagen rebuilds damaged cartilage or cures joint problems.

What it does provide is another scientifically interesting approach to supporting healthy joint function.

So Why Use Both?

This is the question I find most interesting.

If FORTIGEL is already included for cartilage, why add undenatured Type II collagen?

Because they aren't doing the same job.

FORTIGEL provides specialized collagen peptides that have been researched in relation to cartilage.

Undenatured Type II collagen is used at a tiny dose and has been studied through an entirely different, immune-mediated mechanism.

I don't look at one as replacing the other.

I look at them as two different approaches to supporting the same incredibly valuable tissue.

That thinking is central to how I formulated Specialized Collagen Peptides.

And Cartilage Doesn't Operate Alone

There's another point that's easy to miss when we talk about cartilage.

Cartilage doesn't operate in a dry joint.

Healthy movement also depends on the environment surrounding those cartilage surfaces, including synovial fluid and components such as hyaluronic acid that contribute to joint lubrication.

That's important enough that I'll address joint lubrication separately rather than trying to squeeze the entire subject into this article.

But it illustrates the bigger point:

A joint is a system.

Cartilage matters enormously, but so do the tendons, ligaments, joint environment, and other tissues that allow everything to work together.

Don't Forget Vitamin C

There's also a much less exotic ingredient that shouldn't be overlooked.

Vitamin C is required for normal collagen formation.

That's why I include vitamin C in Specialized Collagen Peptides.

It isn't there because vitamin C makes for an exciting front-of-label ingredient. It's there because if we're talking about supporting collagen-containing tissues, normal collagen formation needs to be part of the equation.

What Should You Look For in a Collagen for Cartilage?

If cartilage is one of your main reasons for taking collagen, I wouldn't make my decision solely based on which container has the largest number of grams—or the largest number of collagen “types” printed on the front.

I'd ask better questions:

Has the specific collagen peptide been studied for cartilage?

Does the formula contain complementary ingredients with different mechanisms?

Does it provide vitamin C to support normal collagen formation?

And if your real goal is maintaining an active lifestyle, I'd go one step further:

Does the formula think beyond cartilage and consider the whole joint?
